Safety Information
DO NOT install or use the SEGUFIX-Restraint and Positioning System before you have read and understood the instructions. Failure to use this System properly can lead to serious injury or death. Your patient’s safety depends on you installing and using the SEGUFIX-System correctly.
- Only use by order of a physician:
The SEGUFIX-Products may only be used by or on order of a physician in accordance with manufacturer instructions and provincial and federal regulations, as well as the facility’s policies and procedures. Only well-trained and qualified nursing staff may install and use SEGUFIX-Products. Private individuals must strictly follow physician’s orders.
- Intended use:
SEGUFIX-Products may only be used for medical purposes for which they were designed. The manufacturer’s instructions for use must be strictly adhered to.
- Always inspect before use:
Inspect before use for broken stitches, torn, worn out
or frayed parts and damaged eyelets. Inspect to
ensure that SEGUFIX-Patent Locks and Velcro-
Closures hold securely. Do not use damaged products.
These may fail, resulting in injury.
- Reinforced or fleece belts (belts with an “r” or “f”
in their item number):
While using reinforced belts or the Standard fleece, only three layers of belts may be used per lock, to ensure proper opening of the lock. For more layers an additional lock has to be used.
- Warning: Always attach Side Positioning Straps!
The SEGUFIX-Standard must
never be used without Side
Positioning Straps! Side Positioning
Straps prevent the patient from helicoptering
in bed. Also, without Side
Positioning Straps the patient could
turn over the edge of the bed and strangulate, possibly
resulting in the patient’s death.
- Make sure SEGUFIX-Belts are attached securely
to beds and chairs:
Only use SEGUFIX-Products on beds or steady chairs that allow for attaching the belts according to the instructions for use.
- Helpful hints:
Standards for beds: DIN EN 1970 and DIN EN 60601-2-38
Standards for wheel chairs: DIN EN 12182 and DIN EN 12183
Note:
- Products must be attached to beds or chairs, in such manner that they
cannot slide in any direction.
- The attachment points for the products on beds or chairs must be free
of sharp edges.
- Make sure belts do not interfere with folding parts or moving mechanics
of beds and chairs.
Important note for use on beds and chairs:
The SEGUFIX-Systems do not prevent beds and chairs from tipping over.
- All side rails must be in the up position:
To prevent accidents always lock
bedrails in the up position (except
with five-point-restraint). Caution:
Do not use with parted bedrails
(except with a solid gap protector
that effectively prevents the patient
from slipping through the gap). An open gap might
possibly enable a patient to slip through even with the
restraint fastened causing strangulation.
- Monitor patients frequently!
Patients in restrictive products
require frequent monitoring.
Aggressive, agitated, restless
patients and those in danger of
aspirating require continuous
monitoring.
- Test SEGUFIX-Belts for correct fit:
The correct fit of the belts must be checked regularly to avoid accidents. The belts must be secured to the bed frame (or the folding part of the bed frame) so that they lay tightly against the mattress and cannot slide in any direction. The points of attachment may not have sharp edges. Make sure belts do not interfere with folding parts or moving mechanics.
- Always use the proper products size:
The size of the product must be selected according to the size of the patient (see Waist sizing table). Products that are too small or too large compromise the patient’s comfort and safety!
- Belts must be snug but not interfere with
breathing:
Make sure that the belts are snug, but not too tight. The breathing of the patient must not be hindered. You should be able to slide your open hand between the waist belt and the patient. Also be aware that patients could harm themselves with the restraint too loose.
- Liquid causes Patent Locks to fail:
Do not submerge Patent Locks in
any type of liquid. This will cause
them to malfunction. If the
mechanism of the Patent Lock
fails to open, straps can be cut
with scissors or belt cutters.
Check the head of the pin for signs of wear and
tear (rounding off or compression strain).
- Only use Original SEGUFIX-Products:
To ensure high quality and safety demands only use original SEGUFIX-Products, showing the brand name „SEGUFIX”.
- Pacemaker Warning:
A distance of 10 cm (3.9 inch)
must be maintained between a
patient’s pacemaker and the
SEGUFIX-Magnetic Key,
otherwise the patient could suffer
a tachycardia. For possible
interference of strong magnets with other patient
implants please refer to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Remove dangerous objects:
Remove all objects from the reach of the patient, which could lead to injury (e.g. glasses, jewelry and sharp objects).
- Use of SEGUFIX-Products in moving vehicles:
Only use SEGUFIX-Transport
Belts that are designed for use in
moving vehicles. The SEGUFIX-
Transport Belt System does not
replace the vehicle’s seat belts.
The vehicle’s own seat belts
must be used. The SEGUFIX-Transport Belts may
only be used as additional support or for positioning
of the patient. After an accident, the Transport
Belts could complicate victim rescue. Make sure
that the patient can be quickly rescued. Keep belt
cutters handy and in view.
The SEGUFIX-Bed belts are not suitable for use in vehicles.
- Flammability of SEGUFIX-Belt Systems:
According to DIN EN 71-2:03,
section 4.3 not inflammable.
According to DIN 75200 burning
rate = 0.
Products must not be brought into contact with burning cigarettes or be exposed to open flames, as this will lead to severe damage.
- Expert opinion on how to prevent accidents:
According to the expert opinion of Prof. Dr.-Ing. U.
Boenick (Technical University of Berlin, Germany)
following steps are crucial in accident prevention.
1. Always use Side Positioning Straps
2. Lock non-parted bedrails in the up position (exception: five-point-restraint)
3. Use diagonal restraint (one hand and oposing foot)
